The Outdoor Classroom is a convenient, hands-on setting for natural resource education.

Ready to reserve now? Feel free, or read a little more about the program, and reserve at the bottom of the page. 
   
Outdoor Classroom Facilities
  • A small amphitheater beneath shade trees, perfect for presentations, creative writing, or reflection.
  • A picnic table
  • Restroom (rental arrangements needed prior to event, a small fee may apply)
  • A shelter/enclosed information center.

​Lesson Plans and Activities

Plant Studies

Our Outdoor Classroom includes:
  • 16 varieties of grasses
  • 13 varieties of trees & shrubs
  • A stunning Xeriscape demonstration plot
  • Range grass plots
Students can explore the life cycle of trees and plants. Studies may also include leaf shapes & classification, seed dispersal, plant identification, tree planting, & even nature scavenger hunts
The WCCD has field guides & many other wonderful resources available.

​Bird Studies

Many species of birds are attracted to the habitat at the Outdoor Classroom.  Students might observe red-winged black birds, robins, doves, and many more. Possible bird studies include:
  • Bird identification & watching
  • Learning about adaptations of beaks & feet
  • Understanding of habitats & niches
  • Appreciation for birds.
The WCCD has field guides and binoculars available for avian studies.


​Water Studies

The Outdoor Classroom has its very own wetland. The pond is an excellent place to learn about:
  • Amphibians, such as frogs, toads, & salamanders
  • Capture tadpole & watch their fascinating development. Return them to the pond when they are mature.
  • Learn about damselfly & dragonfly nymphs,  different types of larva, water striders and more.
​The WCCD has many tools from nets, to boots, to sorting trays to aid you in your scientific studies!
